GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited (GVIAL), a subsidiary of GMR Airports Limited (GAL), is developing a Greenfield International Airport at Bhogapuram, Vizianagaram in Andhra Pradesh. This Airport Project is based on the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) basis.
GVIAL would develop the Airport in stages. Initially the airport will be built to service 6 million passengers per annum and it will be scaled up based on passenger traffic growth. The Airport will offer services catering to domestic and international travel besides cargo.
The proposed GreenField airport site lies on the border of Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram districts, and is approximately 45 km from Visakhapatnam through NH-16 (Old NH-5) and 25 km from Vizianagaram via NH-43. The site is strategically located on the east coast and stands to get benefitted from the vast catchment area surrounding the region.
Visakhapatnam a.k.a. Vizag - This port city located between the beautiful and luscious Eastern Ghats and the coast of Bay of Bengal, is the proposed Executive Capital of the State of Andhra Pradesh. Ranked among the fastest-growing cities in the world, this city has a unique name to it - The City of Destiny.
It was the iconic Founder Vice Chancellor of the Andhra University (Estd 1926), Sir CR Reddy who is credited with coining
the phrase 'The City of Destiny' in the 1930s. He was instrumental in relocating the Andhra University, which was
located in Bejawada to the port city which was then a little known fisherman's village - Waltair.
Sir CR Reddy took the bold
decision because he believed this was the city of the future. He envisaged that this fisherman's village would become
the intellectual capital of the state. Today, it is the most populous city in the state of Andhra Pradesh, known for its art,
heritage, tourist attractions and more.
